A group of researchers is condemning Canada for its failure to act to protect workers in poorer countries that receive their exported asbestos. They accuse the Canadian government of protecting the asbestos industry at the risk of many lives in other countries.

The accusation appears on the Canadian Medical Association Journal's website. It says, in part, that "Canada is the only Western democracy to have consistently opposed international efforts to regulate the global trade in asbestos." In a long article complete with scientific footnotes and references, the authors say the Canadian government knows it is doing something "shameful" by selling asbestos to underdeveloped countries that don't have the resources to use it safely.

The argument the Canadian government uses is that chrysotile asbestos is safer than other types (called amphibole). But the researcher-authors argue that there is no such thing as "pure" chrysotile asbestos because mines are not protected environments. They note that contamination with even a tiny amount of amphibole asbestos puts those breathing it as risk of mesothelioma.

The biggest reason the authors are so angry is that Canada is now repressing the use of asbestos within its own country because of the danger from this admitted carcinogen---yet it continues to defend its export operations. Canada is considered one of the leading exporters to countries such as India, Thailand, and Taiwan, where it is used to make cement for construction. Workers in these countries are being exposed without their knowledge to the risk of asbestosis and the devastating mesothelioma lung cancer.

One month before its scheduled Oct. 27 opening, the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair was a hive of activity, with workers on scaffolding performing an elaborate ceiling restoration, while others manned power saws and paintbrushes.

The Wellmont, which has long functioned as an uncomfortable and shabby triplex movie theater, is being resurrected as a concert venue with an early lineup that includes Counting Crows (on opening night), Steely Dan, Tony Bennett, Al Green, Brian Wilson, B.B. King, John Prine, Bill Maher, Matisyahu, and Hanson.

During a recent visit, the venue�"at 5 Seymour Street, just off Bloomfield Avenue�"was taking shape in impressive fashion. The orchestra has been divided into three tiers. Depending on the attraction, these spaces will be used for flexible seating or general admission. Upstairs, the balcony will have 1,000 theater seats. Bars are being installed on each level.

While the seats and most of the finished surfaces had yet to materialize, the restoration work on the walls and ceiling was already bearing fruit. Expert crews have given new life to the dramatic architectural touches and sculpted accents long hidden at the Wellmont, which originally opened in 1922. The vaulted ceiling has been painted a classic Wedgwood blue; its bas-relief ornamentation has been repaired and painted gold. The focal point of the ceiling is a dome decorated with a huge gilded snowflake and encircled by restored stained-glass panels.

The Wellmont will be run by Montclair Entertainment, a partnership between Montclair resident Andy Feltz, who formerly operated New York’s Beacon Theatre, and principals from the Manhattan-based Bowery Presents, including Wyckoff native Jim Glancy.

The restoration team also has Jersey roots. Michael Costantin of Conklin Costantin Architects, one of two main architects on the project, grew up in Bridgewater and lives in Jersey City. Site supervisor Charlie Dube lives in Riverdale. The restoration is using a number of New Jersey vendors, including Wayne Tile and Georgia’s Stained Glass Werks of Rockaway.

Ticket prices to date range from $20 to $150 (for the top Steely Dan ticket). Once the theater opens, there will be a box office on site where fans can purchase tickets surcharge-free.

The venue’s capacity will range from about 1,800 (for seated shows) to 2,400. Where will all their cars go in parking-challenged Montclair downtown?

We know that parking in this area is always a big concern,” says Feltz. We’ve been speaking with local businesses and partners for many months now in order to secure ample parking for the venue, and we’re going to be able to announce our specific plans long before our first show. Nanotechnology is a new area of science that promises to bring great improvements in many manufactured materials---for example, by giving greater strength, flexibility, and durability to plastics and metals. Some scientists, however, have been urging caution because the effects on the human body of the extremely tiny components used in this science are unknown.

The fight to stop the use of asbestos because of its ability to cause long-term and fatal disease in humans has been going on for decades. Since many nanomaterials are similar in size---or even smaller---than loose asbestos fibers, it only makes sense to test what happens to human tissue when exposed to them. Asbestos was considered a "miracle" material---its flexibility and fire retardant properties made it a common ingredient in hundreds of materials.

But the toll in human suffering from the unrestrained use of asbestos in manufacturing is only beginning to be felt. As the number of cases of mesothelioma continues to rise, the cost to workers and their families 30, 40 and 50 years later is tragic. It would be criminal to begin using another substance that had similar capabilities to infect humans with long-term disease and/or death.

A recent study compared the results when human epithelial cells were exposed to two different types of nanomaterials (the tiny fragments of matter used in nanotechnology) and to asbestos fibers. Epithelial cells are the cells in the linings of your body's organs and cavities (lungs, abdomen, etc.), which is where mesothelioma starts and grows.

The study results showed that one type of nanoparticle did slow down cell activity but didn't cause more cells to die. But the other (carbon black) nanotubes did not appear to affect the cells negatively. However, both types of asbestos fibers---chrysotile and crocidolite---entered deeply into the cells, slowed or stopped normal cell activity, and caused cell death (apoptosis).

It is tempting to conclude that all nanomaterials won't be as dangerous as asbestos fibers, but this study clearly indicates there were adverse effects with the nanotubes, though they didn't seem to reach into the human tissue. It's important for ordinary citizens to hold science accountable for what it releases into our lives. Objective tests of nanomaterials are a sign that at least some scientists are keeping the public good uppermost in their work.

Symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath and difficulty

or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. Unlike

lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking
