Mesothelioma and its Treatments

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that occurs in the lining of the membranes of the lungs, heart and abdomen. Malignant mesothelioma affects this membrane causing a lot of pain and suffering and generally results in a quick death.

During such circumstances it becomes necessary to take proper medications and treatments. The treatment is based on three main criteria:

1. The body organ involved
2. The stage of the cancer
3. The age of the patient

However, there are only few options available for the standard treatments and they are:

1.Surgery - This treatment is followed for patients with pleural mesothelioma and involves the removal of part of lining and tissue around the chest or abdomen. At times, if the cancer has grown too large, a pneumonectomy is performed where in the lung or diaphragm is removed.

2.Radiation therapy - This treatment is very widely known as radiotheraphy and includes the high energy radiation to destroy the cancer cells or shrink the cancerous tumor. There are two kinds of radiotherapy:

• External radiation - in this the radiation comes from the machine.
• Internal radiation - in this the radiation comes from the radiation producing materials and it is placed on the affected area only.

3.Chemotherapy - This is the most widely recognized therapy for cancer

wherein anticancer drugs designed to destroy cancer cells in the whole body. These drugs are administered by IV.

Are You In Danger Of Developing Misothelioma

Mesothelioma is a dreaded cancer caused due to asbestos exposure.

Though the symptoms of cancer do not occur immediately, the person

may develop cancer after a few decades. Mesothelioma is a highly

fatal, in many populations, the occurrence of mesothelioma is

monitored with the use of mortality data from death certification.

Mesothelioma is a serious disease. The only known cause of

mesothelioma is asbestos.

As Malignant mesothelioma developers malignant cells develop in the

mesothelium which is a protective lining around most of the body

organs Malignant mesotheliomas are divided into three main types.

About 50% to 70% of mesotheliomas are the epithelioid type. Malignant

mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases.

Asbestosis development starts when a person inhales an amphibole.

This particle travels deep into the lungs to one of the 300 million

gas-exchanging structures called an alveolus. Asbestos fibres can

also be carried into the home on clothing, inadvertently exposing the

deadly fibres, and the risk of mesothelioma, to family members.

Asbestosis is a non-cancerous, chronic lung disease that is also tied

to asbestos exposure.

Symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath and difficulty

breathing, particularly during exertion or physical exercise. This is

due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall)

or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. Unlike

lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking

Treatment options for mesothelioma vary from patient-to-patient and

may include traditional treatments, alternative treatments, new

treatments, or some combination thereof. Since mesothelioma is such a

rare disease, patients who have been diagnosed may wish to seek

treatment from a specialist or team of specialists. Treatment options

for all three types are the same.
